Brie en Croute vs. Creme Caramel

I got to try a new recipe last night for a presentation I had to do in my French class. Our project was to recite a recipe en francais. It didn't have to be complicated, you didn't even have to actually "make" it. But I decided to try something I have never made before that I knew would be yummy and relatively easy to make. Brie en Croute. YUM! Basically a round of Brie cheese wrapped in puff pastry then baked. What could be wrong with melted cheese in pastry dough??

I did what prep work I could the night before and then baked the brie just before I left for class last night. I served it with sliced Granny Smith apples.

There were 5 bonus points to be awarded to the the best presentation of the class as voted by the students. I knew the only competition I had was the other "elder" in the class. Simply because we know how to cook and wouldn't have to prepare our recipes in the E-Z Bake ovens in the dorms.

My competition was Monique. Her mother is from France. Monique made Creme Caramel from a family recipe. It was a somewhat complicated recipe and it was deeslish!! I voted for Monique.

I got my 5 bonus points so did Monique. We want to have a cook-off next week!

Your Brie en Croute sounds great! I had brie recently with mixed berries washed down with a Smithwicks on tap - it was awesome.

Are you learning French cooking as a hobby or as a profession? Good luck either way!

There's a new blog rule. You can't talk about delicious food unless you send me some :)

There's one other similar rule, too.

I'll tell you later.

I've got an even simpler recipie for something to warm a person up if they are camping in the french countryside (or have a fireplace). You take a camanbert (spelling?) cheese in a wooden box. Remove the cheese and unwrap it, but leave the waxy rind on it. Put it back in the box, and put the box in the fire. Let the box burn down, then rescue it from the fire. The cheese is all melty inside the rind. Cut a bagguette in half, cut a hole in the rind, and pour the cheese along the bread.

Yummy, filling, and high in cholestorol :D

Yummy Mike, thanks for the recipe!!

I have another campfire recipe....hollow out an orange, put cake batter in there, wrap it in foil and place it near the campfire on the hot stones. It bakes the cake inside the orange. DEEELISH!
